Nishat Garden Srinagar: The Garden of Bliss on Dal Lake
Nishat Garden (Nishat Bagh), meaning "Garden of Bliss" in Persian, is the second-largest Mughal garden in Kashmir and one of Srinagar's most stunning tourist attractions. Built in 1633 AD by Asaf Khan, brother of Empress Nur Jahan, this terraced garden stretches along the eastern shore of Dal Lake with the majestic Zabarwan mountains as its backdrop.
Spanning 46 acres, Nishat Garden features twelve terraces representing the twelve signs of the zodiac, each level offering progressively spectacular views of Dal Lake and surrounding mountains. The garden combines Persian architectural principles with Kashmir's natural beauty, creating one of India's most photographed landscapes.
History of Nishat Bagh
Nishat Garden was commissioned in 1633 AD by Asaf Khan, the powerful Mughal courtier who served as the elder brother of Empress Nur Jahan and father of Empress Mumtaz Mahal (for whom the Taj Mahal was built). The garden was designed by Asaf Khan as a gift for his wife, though some historians believe it was intended to impress Emperor Shah Jahan during his visits to Kashmir.
Legend has it that Emperor Shah Jahan was so impressed by Nishat Garden's beauty that he asked Asaf Khan to gift it to the royal family. When Asaf Khan politely declined, the emperor supposedly ordered the garden's water supply cut off. Eventually, a compromise was reached, and the garden was restored. Today, Nishat Bagh remains one of the finest examples of Mughal garden architecture in Kashmir.
Architecture and Layout of Nishat Garden
Nishat Garden follows the classic Persian "Charbagh" (four-garden) design with a central water channel running through twelve ascending terraces. The terraces symbolize the twelve signs of the zodiac in Islamic astrology. The garden's symmetrical layout creates perfect harmony between architecture and nature.
Twelve Terraces
Each terrace serves a specific purpose and offers unique views. The lower terraces were originally for public use, middle terraces for the courtiers, and upper terraces reserved for royal family members. The highest terrace offers panoramic views of Dal Lake stretching toward Srinagar city.
Water Features
A central water channel fed by mountain springs flows through all twelve terraces, creating cascades and fountains. The gentle sound of flowing water combined with bird songs creates a peaceful atmosphere perfect for relaxation. The water channel terminates in a large pool at the lowest terrace.
Flora and Plantings
Nishat Garden features hundreds of Chinar trees, rose bushes, seasonal flowers, and fruit trees including apple, cherry, and almond. Spring (April-May) transforms the garden into a riot of colors with blooming tulips, roses, and fruit blossoms. Autumn brings brilliant red-gold Chinar foliage.
