Shalimar Bagh: The Royal Mughal Garden of Kashmir
Shalimar Bagh (Shalimar Garden), meaning "Abode of Love" in Persian, is Kashmir's largest and most magnificent Mughal garden. Built in 1619 AD by Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Empress Nur Jahan, this 31-acre masterpiece on Dal Lake's northeastern shore represents the pinnacle of Mughal garden architecture in India.
The garden served as the summer residence for Mughal emperors visiting Kashmir and hosted elaborate royal functions. Today, Shalimar Bagh is the most visited garden in Kashmir and a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
History and Royal Heritage
Emperor Jahangir commissioned Shalimar Bagh in 1619 AD as a gift for Empress Nur Jahan, though the site had an earlier garden built by a Kashmiri nobleman. Jahangir expanded and redesigned the garden into the elaborate structure seen today. Emperor Shah Jahan later enlarged Shalimar Bagh, adding the top terraces and black marble pavilions.
The garden hosted royal celebrations, poetry recitals, and musical performances. Emperors would arrive by royal barge across Dal Lake, disembarking at the water channel that flows through the garden's center. This water channel, fed by mountain springs, remains the garden's defining feature.
Architecture and Layout
Shalimar Garden follows the classic Persian Charbagh design with four terraces separated by water channels and cascades. The terraces represent different levels of court hierarchy, each progressively more exclusive.
The Four Terraces
1. Diwan-e-Aam (Public Audience Hall): The lowest terrace, open to public and courtiers
2. Diwan-e-Khas (Private Audience Hall): Middle terrace for emperor's private meetings with nobility
3. Zenana Garden (Ladies' Garden): Upper terrace reserved for royal women and emperor's family
4. Baradari (Black Pavilion): Highest terrace with black marble pavilion offering panoramic Dal Lake views
Black Marble Pavilion
The crowning glory of Shalimar is the black marble pavilion at the highest terrace. Built by Shah Jahan, this octagonal structure features intricate carvings and calligraphy. The pavilion offers stunning views of the entire garden, Dal Lake, and surrounding mountains.
