Government Botanical Garden Srinagar Kashmir
The Government Botanical Garden in Srinagar, located near Chashme Shahi Mughal Garden, is Kashmir's premier botanical research and conservation center. Established in 1969, this 80-hectare garden showcases rare Himalayan plant species, medicinal herbs, and exotic flora from around the world, making it a paradise for nature lovers, botanists, and photography enthusiasts.
Unlike ornamental Mughal gardens focused on aesthetics, the Botanical Garden serves dual purposes — public recreation and scientific research. It houses thousands of plant species, many endemic to the Kashmir Himalayas and endangered due to climate change and habitat loss.
History and Purpose
The Botanical Garden was established by the Jammu & Kashmir government in 1969 to conserve Kashmir's unique Himalayan flora. The garden functions under the Kashmir University's Department of Botany, conducting research on alpine plants, medicinal herbs, and endangered species.
The garden's research focuses on identifying plants with medicinal properties, developing climate-resilient varieties, and educating the public about Kashmir's biodiversity. It plays a crucial role in preserving plant species threatened by urbanization and climate change in the Kashmir valley.
