Pahalgam, the "Valley of Shepherds," sits in Anantnag district roughly 90–100 km from Srinagar — about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive. It's built around the Lidder River and serves as the base for three of Kashmir's most photographed valleys: Betaab, Aru, and Chandanwari.
The Taxi Union Rule (Read This First)
Whatever cab brings you from Srinagar to Pahalgam cannot continue on to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, or Chandanwari — local sightseeing routes from Pahalgam town are controlled by the Pahalgam Taxi Union, and outside vehicles are turned back at forest department checkpoints. You'll rent a local union vehicle from the stand in Pahalgam (most hotels can arrange this in minutes).
The Three Valleys
- Betaab Valley — about 7–15 km from Pahalgam (sources vary by exact measuring point), named after the 1983 Bollywood film shot there. Small entry fee applies. Closes at sunset.
- Aru Valley — roughly 12–13 km from Pahalgam, known as the "Valley of Pines" and the base camp for treks toward Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar. No entry fee.
- Chandanwari — around 15–16 km from Pahalgam, the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra trek. There's little at Chandanwari itself beyond tea stalls — the drive there is the attraction.
Betaab Valley and Chandanwari sit on the same road, so most day trips combine them, with Aru Valley as a separate branch. Covering all three comfortably takes a full day.
Don't Miss Baisaran Valley
Nicknamed "Mini Switzerland," Baisaran is a short pony ride or trek from Pahalgam town itself — no union taxi required for this one. It's a good half-day add-on if you have extra time.
Practical tip: given the distance and the taxi-union logistics, Pahalgam works best as either a long day trip with an early start from Srinagar, or an overnight in Pahalgam itself. If you're doing it as a day trip, plan to leave Dal Lake by 6–7 AM to make the most of the day.
