Gulmarg — literally "Meadow of Flowers" — sits at roughly 2,650 metres in the Baramulla district, about 50 km from Srinagar. It's the most dramatic day trip (or overnight) most Kashmir itineraries include, and it looks entirely different depending on the season you visit.
Getting There from Srinagar
The drive from Srinagar to Gulmarg covers about 50 km via Tangmarg and takes roughly 1.5–2 hours by private cab. Private vehicles aren't allowed beyond the Gulmarg main gate, so your driver parks there and you continue on foot, by pony, or by local transport. In winter, only local vehicles are permitted beyond Tangmarg due to snow — you'll switch cars at fixed local rates.
The Gulmarg Gondola
One of the highest cable car systems in the world, the gondola runs in two phases:
- Phase 1 — Gulmarg base to Kongdoori (~3,080m), roughly 9–15 minutes.
- Phase 2 — Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak (~3,979m), where snow is permanent year-round and Nanga Parbat is visible on clear days.
Ticket prices change seasonally and by government revision, so always confirm current rates at the official counter or JKTDC/JKCCCC site before you go. Book in advance during peak season (May–July and December–January) — queues get long.
Note on altitude: Apharwat Peak sits close to 4,000m. If you feel dizzy or short of breath, it's fine to stop at Kongdoori (end of Phase 1) instead of continuing up.
Best Time to Visit Gulmarg
- December–February (winter): Peak skiing and snowboarding season. Gulmarg is India's premier ski destination, with the gondola doubling as the main ski lift.
- March–May (spring): Meadows begin to green, snow still lingers at higher elevations — a good middle ground.
- June–August (summer): Cool, green, and comfortable — a welcome escape if you're also spending time in Srinagar's warmer lake-level heat.
Where it fits in your itinerary: most travelers base themselves in Srinagar and do Gulmarg as a full-day trip. Staying on Dal Lake at Olympias means you start the morning already close to the Srinagar–Tangmarg road, and come back in the evening to a quiet houseboat instead of a city hotel — a good way to bookend a high-altitude day with a slower one.
