Planning a trip for eight people spanning three generations is its own kind of project management. My parents needed quiet and easy access to their room. My kids needed something to actually do besides sit still. My husband and I needed maybe twenty minutes a day where nobody needed anything from us. Somehow, Olympias delivered on all three.
We split across a Luxury Suite and two Deluxe Rooms, all on the same level, which mattered more than I expected — my father has knee trouble, and not having to manage stairs multiple times a day made the whole stay easier for him. Saif had asked about that specifically when we booked, which told me he'd actually thought about who was coming, not just how many.
"The kids got their own small Shikara with a boatman who clearly does this often — patient, funny, taught them a few words of Kashmiri along the way. My in-laws got their quiet morning tea on the sundeck before anyone else was awake."
Food was the other pleasant surprise. Wazwan can be a lot for young kids, so the kitchen adjusted portions and spice levels for the children without making it feel like a separate "kids menu" — same dishes, gentler heat. My mother, who is fairly particular about food when traveling, ate everything without a single complaint, which is as close to a five-star review as she gives anyone.
By the third day, the kids had made friends with the boatman's nephew, my parents had a favorite corner of the sundeck staked out, and I finally understood what people mean when they say a houseboat stay slows down a family trip in the right way. Six nights felt like enough, but only barely — we're already talking about coming back.
