There isn't really a "wrong" time to visit Kashmir — there's a different Kashmir depending on when you go. The honest answer to "when should I visit" depends entirely on what you actually want out of the trip.
Spring — March to May
Almond blossoms and tulip fields (Asia's largest Tulip Garden is in Srinagar) make spring one of the most photogenic windows. Weather is mild but changeable — pack layers. Gulmarg still has snow at altitude while the valley floor greens up. Good for travelers who want flowers and moderate crowds.
Summer — June to August
Kashmir's summer is why it earned the nickname "paradise on earth" — comfortable daytime temperatures (roughly 20–30°C in Srinagar) while most of India swelters. This is peak season: houseboats, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam all get busy, so book well ahead. Best for families and first-time visitors who want reliably pleasant weather.
Autumn — September to November
Locally called "Harud," this is when Srinagar's giant Chinar trees turn deep red and gold — arguably the most underrated season for photography, with far fewer crowds than summer. Nights get cold by late October. Best for travelers prioritizing scenery and quiet over guaranteed warmth.
Winter — December to February
Dal Lake can partially freeze, Gulmarg turns into India's premier ski destination, and Srinagar itself gets a quieter, snow-draped charm most tourists never see. Houseboats stay heated and cozy — many guests say a winter houseboat night by the bukhari (traditional wood stove) is the most memorable part of the whole trip. Best for travelers who want snow, skiing, and low crowds, and don't mind cold.
Short version: summer for comfort and first trips, spring for blossoms, autumn for photography and quiet, winter for snow and skiing.
